BIOGRAPHY OF PROFESSOR MAX HIENDLMAYR

Professor Max Hiendlmayr was born in
Bavaria April 11, 1890. He received his edu-
cation in music in Regensburg and attended
the Academie of Music in Beuron, where he
received his degree as Professor of Music.
Besides being Organist in Straubing, he was
Organist and Choir Director at the Basilica in
Ottobeuren, Bavaria before coming to St.
Mary's Church in Alton, Illinois in 1923.

Father Joseph Meckel was instrumental in
bringing Professor Hiendlmayr to St. Mary's
with the help of Father Eckhard, who toured
Europe and heard of the Professor's ability
while in Ottobeuren. For 47 years Professor
Hiendlmayr has been Organist and Choir
Director at St. Mary's.

His talent is not limited to St. Mary's as he
has played the Viola in the Alton Civic Orches-
tra from its conception. He has directed the
United Singers of St. Louis for the past 30
years, during which time they have appeared
in Detroit and Chicago. In 1966 he directed
the St. Louis Symphony and 4,000 singers on
the stage of Kiel Auditorium. In 1964 he was
Conductor and Artistic Director of the Song
Festival of North American Singers' League in
connection with the Bi-Centennial Festival of
St. Louis. He also played the organ at the in-
stallation of Bishop James A. Griffin in the
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in
Springfield in 1924.

Professor Hiendlmayr has composed many
variations of the music at Mass which has
received wide acclaim.

The people of St. Mary's love his organ
music so much that they have persuaded him
to put the above renditions into this album.
