Hatching Snapping Turtle Eggs (no audio)
This video is purposefully muted because I personally have a sensory sensitivity and do not like videos with loud music or yelling, plus these turtles make no noise so there was no reason to include audio anyway. These are just some clips I recorded of the whole process, from hatching to release.
Earlier this summer, I had a female snapping turtles lay her eggs in the middle of the busy gravel road by our house. I carefully dug them up and relocated them 100 yards away onto our property and fenced them off so predators couldn’t get to them. The WI dnr estimates that a tenth of one percent of hatchlings survive. This nest had 55 eggs. On day 92, 47 eggs successfully hatched, the remaining were infertile and never incubated.
