STORYLINE:
Co-defendants in the bribery case against New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez arrived at federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday for an arraignment.
Menendez and his wife Nadine Menendez have pleaded not guilty to the charges lodged against them last month, which included allegations of accepting bribes of cash, gold bars and a luxury car from three New Jersey businessmen who wanted the senator's help and influence over foreign affairs.
Co-defendant Wael Hana pleaded not guilty last month to charges including conspiracy to commit bribery.
In an email, Hana’s attorney, Lawrence Lustberg, said the “new allegation that Wael Hana was part of a plot concocted over dinner to enlist Senator Menendez as an agent of the Egyptian Government is as absurd as it is false.”
According to the indictment, Hana and Nadine Menendez also communicated requests and directives from Egyptian officials to Menendez.
Menendez was accused of trying to interfere in two criminal cases, pushing prosecutors to either drop an investigation or give leniency to friends of his associates.
In return, prosecutors said, one businessman, Jose Uribe, bought Nadine Menendez a $60,000 luxury car.
Uribe has pleaded not guilty.
Real estate developer Fred Daibes had pleaded guilty in a separate banking fraud case last April.
September's indictment accused Daibes of paying cash and gold to Menendez in exchange for the senator’s efforts to install a U.S. attorney who would provide favorable treatment in that case.
