BBC1: News and Sport / continuity - Saturday 15th September 1984

We begin this sequence in the middle of an unplanned interlude. The Last Night of the Proms unexpectedly finishes early, leaving a flustered Malcolm Eynon to fill time with some music and a menu.

Eventually, it's time for the late news and sport with Jan Leeming and Mark Austin - and as you may expect from this night, the Royal baby dominates, before pivoting to more serious matters.

Headlines:
- Second son for Princess Diana
- Mother and son due to leave hospital tomorrow
- Street parties held to celebrate baby's arrival
- Miners' strike: MacGregor says talks over unless picket violence ends
- Thousands join strike rally in Glasgow
- South Africa: mass funerals held after rent boycott riots
- Botha appoints black and Indian MPs to cabinet
- Lawyer for Durban consulate fugitives flying to London
- Kinnock claims Government insists on prosecuting Clive Ponting
- TA soldiers join 'Exercise Lionheart'

And in sport:
- Eighth St Leger victory for Lester Piggott
- Manchester United beat ten-man Coventry 3-0
- Chris Tavare sacked as Kent captain

Followed by the national weather with Bill Giles, and to round off, the opening moments of Match of the Day.
