8,000 Waves: A limited-edition design collection inspired by the pearl diving tradition.

The history of pearl diving in the UAE extends to over 8,000 years. While pearl diving was lucrative in the past, it was also physically demanding on the pearl divers, many of whom suffered intense hardship while diving to the oyster beds of the Arabian Gulf.

8,000 Waves is a collaboration between Todomuta, a Spanish design studio, and Asateer, an Emirati design studio founded by Mohammed Al Suwaidi, the grandson of a pearl diver, who has brought the craft of Mother of Pearl to the UAE. Crafted in metal, inlaid with mother of pearl, the collection consists of a unique wall sculpture and a limited-edition series of candleholders and incense burners.

The rhythmic, reflective forms of the 8,000 Waves collection evoke the waves of the Arabian Gulf, the reflections
of the sea, the sun and the light, and the shape of the boats that carried the pearl divers for months at a time. The patterns of the mother of pearl inlay have been inspired by the varied forms of the pearls collected and the material itself has been cut from oyster shells farmed locally in Ras Al Khaimah.

8,000 Waves is a multilayered expression of the UAE, its history and its spirit today. It tells the story of hardship and prosperity, of respect for the past and the memory of our grandfathers; but it also talks to the young and entrepreneurial spirit of the UAE through the story of Asateer.
