Flowing Crafts Design Installation.
Flowing Crafts is a window installation designed by architect Carmello Zappulla and fashion designer Rami Al Ali, in collaboration with Al Ghadeer UAE Crafts, for MENASA – Emirati Design Platform. A 13-metre-long flowing sculptural form dressed with traditional Emirati crafts, it captures the attention of visitors as they approach the MENASA design space at the heart of the Expo 2020 Dubai site.

Merging cutting-edge 3D printing technology with traditional Emirati crafts and materials, Flowing Crafts exemplifies the promise of MENASA as a platform for dialogue and innovation across disciplines, complementing and enriching the experience for visitors from their very first encounter.

Taking inspiration from nature, Italian architect Carmello Zappulla used 3D printing technology to create the eye-catching, dynamic form of interweaving lines that evokes the power of both natural forces and technological innovation.
Dubai-based Syrian fashion designer Rami Al Ali, known for his striking couture creations, was then invited to ‘dress’ the futuristic, flowing 3D-printed form. In collaboration with Al Ghadeer UAE Crafts in Abu Dhabi, an Emirates Red Crescent organization that empowers women through handicrafts, Al Ali selected and worked with the wool of Sadu, the intricate, golden patterns of Talli embroidery, local natural fibers and the threads used to weave traditional fishing nets. Looking first to the essential origins of the materials, Rami Al Ali explored how their tactile and aesthetic qualities interact with each other, with light and with the flowing lines of the installation.

Although removed from visitors within the window space behind a sheet of glass, the orchestrated interplay be- tween form, textures, colours, patterns and light creates for visitors the sense of a tactile experience through a purely visual one.
