Crossing the Equator in Ecuador - Mitad del Mundo and Calacali near Quito

Travelling to the Galápagos Islands we first stopped in Quito, right next to the equator line.

As it turns out the equator is not as straight forward as we thought.The world changes shape and therefore the equator moves as well. That imaginary line is more of a wide strip.

Mitad del Mundo is located within the area considered the equator and is the most visited tourist attraction in Ecuador. But the line that is 0º latitude on Google Maps runs through the small town of Calacalí north of Quito.

Both Mitad del Mundo and Calacalí is worth a visit! And in both places you can be walking across and stand on each side of a line to become a stereotypical tourist!
