What is Sundowning? Although there's no official diagnosis for Sundown Syndrome, many caregivers of older adults with dementia or Alzheimer's see these symptoms in their senior loved ones, including us (Robin's father experienced sundowning during the last few weeks of his life).

1) Exhaustion
2) Frustration
3) Exposure to fighting and disturbing images
4) Discomfort
5) Disorientation
6) Lack of sleep
7) Medications
8) Poor lighting
19 Things You Can Do To Manage Sundowning
1) Keep the home well lit
2) Make their bed and bedroom as comfortable as possible
3) If sleep is a problem - talk to your physician
4) Eat smaller meals at dinner time
5) Avoid stimulants such as coffee, alcohol and nicotine at night
6) Create a schedule / routine and stick to it
7) Avoid sleeping too much during the day
8) Avoid having nothing to do - implement purposeful activities
9) Don't force your senior loved one to do anything they do not want to do
10) Stick to their old schedule and activities if possible
11) Avoid arguments and agitation
12) Try to understand what they need if they can't verbalize it
13) Use music if that soothes them
14) Simple meditation and breathing exercises may help
15) Some doctors will recommend vitamins
16) Look for things that may sooth them such as foot baths
17) Essential oils may help
18) Go for a walk or a drive
19) Caregivers should join a support group for help
