Why This Robot Never Stopped Cleaning

“Can’t Help Myself” is a large-scale robotic art installation created in 2016 by Chinese artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu. The artwork features an industrial robotic arm programmed to continuously push a thick red liquid back into a designated area whenever it spreads across the floor.

At first glance, the machine appears to simply perform a repetitive cleaning task. But over time, its movements — sometimes aggressive, sometimes strangely human-like — led many visitors to form emotional connections with the robot. As the liquid repeatedly escaped its boundaries, the robot endlessly continued its task without rest.

Many people interpreted the installation as a symbol of exhaustion, control, labor, anxiety, or the endless struggles humans experience in everyday life. Although the artists never gave a single official meaning, the emotional reaction it created became part of what made the artwork so memorable.

“Can’t Help Myself” was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York from 2016 to 2019, where millions of visitors witnessed its strangely mesmerizing behavior. As time passed, many viewers felt the robot appeared to move slower and less energetically, adding to the emotional impact of the piece.
