Why This Hiking Trail Terrifies People

The Mürren Via Ferrata is one of Switzerland’s most thrilling cliffside hiking routes, located high above Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Bernese Alps. Unlike ordinary hiking trails, this route requires climbers to move along steel ladders, cables, and iron steps permanently attached to steep mountain cliffs.

At some sections, hikers travel nearly 800 meters above the valley floor, creating breathtaking views — and terrifying exposure for those afraid of heights. Because of the route’s steep terrain and safety concerns, the trail is designed to be completed in one direction only: downhill from Mürren toward Gimmelwald.

Originally built to help climbers safely navigate dangerous cliff faces, via ferratas combine hiking and climbing through fixed steel supports attached directly to the mountain. Today, they attract adventurers from around the world seeking one of the most unforgettable experiences in the Swiss Alps.
