Greta Gerwig Attached to Direct ‘Narnia’ Movie

In 2018, Netflix announced had acquired the film and TV rights to The Chronicles of Narnia book series. Said Ted Sarandos at the time. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.” But since that 2018 acquisition, the streamer has yet to announce any projects based on the beloved book series.

There were plans for a fourth movie, The Silver Chair, to come out and it even had Joe Johnston attached as a director, but production company Walden Media let its rights to The Chronicles of Narnia lapse in 2018 and Netflix snatched them up to spearhead this current adaptation initiative.

Cinephiles may be put off by this evolution of the form, but as Gerwig’s agent, U.T.A.’s Jeremy Barber, notes, that’s the era we’re in, like it or not. “Is it a great thing that our great creative actors and filmmakers live in a world where you can only take giant swings around consumer content and mass-produced products? I don’t know. But it is the business. So, if that’s what people will consume, then let’s make it more interesting, more complicated,” he argues. And it’s an evolution that Gerwig is an active participant in: “Greta and I have been very consciously constructing a career. Her ambition is to be not the biggest woman director but a big studio director. And Barbie was a piece of I.P. that was resonant to her.”

No further details were revealed, so we don't yet know whether Gerwig plans to start again with The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe or starting at another book/part of the timeline. Disney and Fox previously produced movies based on a few of the books, directed by Andrew Adamson and Michael Apted, respectively. They were well received, but met with increasingly diminishing box office returns.

2 The Chronicles of Narnia Movies Will Be Directed & Written by Barbie Director
According to The New Yorker, Gerwig has a deal with Netflix to write and direct at least two movies based on C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. It is unknown whether these movies would be in the same continuity as The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader or if they would be a complete reboot.
