Three generations of Black Hollywood royalty walked the red carpet at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on April 27 — and what they said about the film says it all.
Vivica A. Fox, Janelle Monáe and Erika Alexander attended the Is God Is New York premiere — and all three were unanimous: it's one of the best scripts they've ever read. Monáe said: "I think we all would agree — one of the best scripts we've read in our lives." Alexander went further: "I said it was the best script I've read." Monáe: "I'll go with you. The best script. It took us on a ride. We're toxic, we are lovable, we love each other, we hate each other, we're funny."
The film gives Black women something Hollywood rarely makes room for: the freedom to be angry, chaotic, and deeply human all at once.
The story follows twin sisters Racine and Anaia — played by Kara Young and Mallori Johnson — who have survived a childhood of ab**e and carry burn scars as proof. Their bedridden mother Ruby, played by Vivica A. Fox, summons them with a single mission: find their father and k**l him. Erika Alexander plays Divine, and Janelle Monáe plays Angie — both women tied to the same a**sive man, each carrying a different form of survival. Sterling K. Brown plays the father — and critics are already calling his performance one of the best of his career.
