Happy Birthday to one of the most versatile and underrated figures in hip-hop history.
Fred Scruggs Jr., known to the world as Fredro Starr of the iconic group Onyx, was born on April 18, 1971 in Flatbush, Brooklyn, before relocating to Jamaica, Queens in his teenage years — where he attended John Adams High School and crossed paths with Sonny Seeza and Big DS, the future members of Onyx.
The group was discovered by the late, great Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC, who signed Onyx to his JMJ Records label — launching one of the most high-energy acts in hardcore hip-hop history. And Fredro never stopped. He has starred in more than 55 films and television shows, with credits including Spike Lee's Clockers, Save the Last Dance, 8 Mile, Blade, The Wire, and Moesha.
On the family side, Fredro has a deep bond with his brother — the two released a joint EP called Brothers in 2021. He married supermodel Korina Longin in 2007, building a life far away from the chaos of his early years in Brooklyn.
55 years of Fredro Starr. Queens raised him. Hip-hop claimed him. And his legacy is still being written. 🙌
