How To Use Goal Seek in Excel for What If Analysis
Goal Seek is one of the What-If Analysis tools in excel that helps you find an input value of your desired results. Goal Seek must need a formula to give you the desired result. Suppose you have a formula that adds 5 to 4, and it will give you a result of 9. If you want the result to be 11 and you want to change only one input value, then Goal Seek will change the second value and make it six to get 11 in your formula result. Now the best thing is that it will not change the formula. So, goal seek is a tool that changes input value to match the result.

From the example above, we find that goal seek determines what value should be entered in an input cell to get the desired outcome in a formula cell.

How do you use Goal Seek to answer what-if questions?
Once you access the goal seek feature from the Data tab and what-if analysis menu, it will give you three fields. Once you fill those fields, Goal Seek will answer your what-if questions.

Let’s learn how to use goal seek in excel.
Step 1: Click on the data tab.
Step 2: Click on What if Analysis and select Goal Seek.
Step 3: Select the cell with the formula
Step 4: Provide the desired value of that formula cell.
Step 5: Select the input cell you need to change to match the desired outcome.
Done. The best thing about Goal Seek in Excel is that it performs all calculations behind the scenes and gives you your result.

How do you use Goal Seek with two variables?
Goal seek cannot calculate what-if questions with two variables. For that, you’ll need the solver add-ins. In the next tutorial, I’ll explain how solver add-ins can answer what-if questions with multiple variables.
