Jeremy Wade Delle | The Tragic Real Life Story Behind Pearl Jam’s Song Jeremy

In 1992, Pearl Jam released their third single off their debut album Ten, called Jeremy. Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam’s frontman, wrote the lyrics to this song combining two true stories. One was from his own experience in junior high in San Diego. Vedder had attended school with a student named Brian, who he had altercations with before. One day Brian came into school and shot up an empty oceanography room. Vedder had been in the hallway at the time and heard the gun going off.

The other true story came from a news article about 15-year-old high school student in Richardson, Texas named Jeremy Wade Delle, who we’ll be talking about today. On the morning of January 8, 1991, Jeremy got a hall pass from his teacher to go get an admission slip from the office. He had been sent to in school suspension previously, and needed a slip to say he finished his time there and could go back to his regular classes. Jeremy left the classroom for a few minutes. He then walked back into his English class, stood in front of the room of about 30 students, and turned to his teacher and said, “Miss, I got what I really went for". He then put the barrel of a gun in his mouth, and pulled the trigger before his teacher or classmates could do anything.

Jeremy’s story stuck with Vedder and he later said in interviews that he felt moved to give Jeremy’s story more importance. When I think back to the early 90’s, we didn’t really talk about mental health issues. It’s only been more recently that we are more open about it and there is less of a stigma surrounding it. And I think Eddie Vedder saw a need back then to get the conversation going and bring awareness to these very real issues.
