Today is International Ti’ Punch Day, celebrating one of the most iconic drinks of the French Caribbean.
The Ti’ Punch, short for “petit punch,” comes from Martinique and Guadeloupe and follows a simple local formula known as CRS: Citron, Rhum, Sucre — lime, rum, and sugar.
What makes the drink unique is its base spirit: rhum agricole, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, giving it a distinctive grassy and aromatic character deeply tied to the agricultural traditions of the French Caribbean.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Ti’ Punch is that it’s rarely prepared by a bartender. Traditionally, the bottle of rum, the lime, and the sugar are placed on the table and everyone mixes their own drink.
This tradition explains the famous saying from the islands:
“Chacun prépare sa propre mort.”
Meaning everyone decides how strong their drink will be.
Historically, rum punches were already described in the French Caribbean in the 19th century, notably by writer Lafcadio Hearn in Two Years in the West Indies (1890).
Today, the Ti’ Punch remains a powerful symbol of Caribbean culture and is traditionally stirred with a small wooden stick called a bois lélé, one of the ancestors of the Caribbean swizzle stick.
So tell me — do you make your Ti’ Punch with cane sugar or cane syrup?
