UK police officer charged in murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard

A serving British police officer has been charged with the murder and kidnap of 33-year-old Sarah Everard, Metropolitan Police said on Friday.

Everard disappeared last Wednesday while walking home from a friend's house in south London and the case has sparked outrage and calls to better address the safety and security of women. Police announced Friday, just hours before the officer was officially charged, that a body found Wednesday in a wood outside London was Everard.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday said he was "shocked and appalled" at the news of her disappearance.
