What Happened to Market Square Arena? ABANDONED?

Before the NBA even existed, Indianapolis took the risk and invested in sports for its future. The popular Indiana Pacers of the ABA quickly outgrew the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Years before other cities built arenas and stadiums for professional sports, Indianapolis decided to construct Market Square Arena to house the team, and despite almost folding in the ABA-NBA merger, the Pacers embraced their new home.

MSA also hosted the city's first final four and all kinds of events. Michael Jackson played his only shows as an adult in his home state at the arena during his Bad World Tour. In perhaps one of the most iconic concerts of all time, Elvis Presley performed at Market Square 7 weeks before his death in his final concert, giving rise to the phrase "Ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis has left the building".

Giving the early adoption of the arena compartively and Indy's constant push for more sporting events, the Indiana Sports Corp decided in the late 1990s to replace MSA with a Indiana high school basketball-themed fieldhouse that was designed for basketball specifically. The arena lasted two years after the new venue was built, but essentially an abandoned arena after Conseco Fieldhouse opened in 1999. Surprisingly, after implosion, the site was a gravel parking lot for over 15 years before Cummins and a luxury real estate developer built new projects in the arenas place.
