Basutho Dance

Angus of @AfricanStorybook and some travel media colleagues were seeking out authentic travel experiences in the southern African mountain kingdom of Lesotho. This one minute video clip offers a visual snapshot of this northern part of the country.

In the Basuto village of Matsoaing, returning from a ride into the hills on the legendary Basuto ponies, we came across music and dance.

A group of South African 15 year-old schoolgirls were on a 21 day hike from the small southern Drakensberg town of Underberg in South Africa, over the Sani Pass and into Lesotho. They were staying at homestays in the village, and as we could see, enjoying their engagement with the local culture. In the higher altitude areas Basutos almost always wear blankets - the colours belonging to certain regions - and the men wear wooly hats not unlike balaclavas.

The instruments being used here are a Moropa ( man made drum) and Mamokhorong ( the one with the string).

Angus is a photojournalist of over 20 years experience, using that experience to inform his parallel career as a private guide and itinerary designer.
