Rhino Ridge
The Heart and Soul of an African Wilderness
Having been a busy TV producer in a previous life, ever since our phones became capable of producing decent quality, I've been capturing moments in moving pictures (a tad challenging when shooting stills).
That's what happened on my recent visit to Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, searching for stories and 'content'. A place far off the beaten safari track, in Africa’s oldest game reserve, iMfolozi-Hluhluwe Park. I couldn't stop capturing moments.
It’s one of those places soaked in story, like the tale of how the threatened southern white rhino, back in 1895, was brought back from the proverbial brink, here in this park. This is where visionary 20th Zululand conservationists, among them Dr Ian Player and Nick Steele, took that initiative to the next level, with Operation Rhino. And where Player (a reader of Carl Jung) and Magqubu Ntombela, both philosophical thinkers, embodied the notion of wilderness, the veteran Ntombela guiding the young Player.
In this profound space, Rhino Ridge highlights the positives in the evolving relationship between conservation and community in South Africa’s national parks and game reserves.
In a good way. Alongside cuisine and hospitality the ridge as good as it gets and the ‘Big' (and small) Five' wildlife living life down below.
Please contact me if in need of a private guide in South or southern Africa.
