Mount Taygetus (Peloponnese) #taygetus

The Taygetos is a mountain range that rises in the Peloponnese, which dominates the city of Sparta and separates Laconia from Messenia. Its southern foothills form the central ridge of the Mani Peninsula. The most famous peak is Mount Taygetus, also known as "Profitis Ilias", "prophet Elijah". The toponym is one of the oldest known in Europe, being mentioned for the first time in Homer's Odyssey. In Greek mythology, the name is associated with the nymph Taigete. In the Byzantine era and until the 19th century, the mountain was also known as Πενταδάκτυλος (Pentadàktylos, or in Greek "with five fingers", a common term in that historical period).
