Comacchio, Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Europe
Comacchio is an Italian town in the province of Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna.
Born as a lagoon city, the insularity of Comacchio came to an end in 1821, when the road embankment that connects it to Ostellato was built. Comacchio was besieged and conquered by the Serenissima five times in the early Middle Ages until it entered the territories controlled by the Este from 1299. With the devolution of Ferrara to the Papal State and the end of the Este dukedom, in 1598, the entire province, Comacchio, including Comacchio, was directly controlled by the Holy See and Pope Clement VIII united the valley city to the territory in the newly formed Legation of Ferrara. Comacchio was part of the Papal State until March 1860, when the territories of the former legations were annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia as a result of the plebiscites. In Comacchio the Ancient Delta Museum is active, set up in the Hospital of the sick which exhibits in addition to many other finds, the cargo of the Roman ship Fortuna Maris, previously exhibited at Palazzo Bellini in the Roman Ship Museum. The wreck of the ship was found in 1981 near Comacchio. In it were found amphorae, glasses, cups and balsams as well as tools for the maintenance of the ship and for trade and objects for the preparation of food on board. The museum of the Marinated Manufacture was recently opened, showing the processing cycle of eels and aquadelle. The main activities are currently connected to tourism, especially in the summer in its seven shores, commercial fishing, valley farming and, in the past, the production of salt whose trade was a source of bitter disputes with the Serenissima Republic of Venice. The activity linked to the manufacture of marinated eels is also very important. Comacchio is appreciated, in terms of tourism, for having kept intact most of its architectural characteristics over time, characterized by the presence of canals, ancient buildings and monumental bridges (the most characteristic of which is that of Trepponti) which give it its appearance typical of the lagoon cities that are further north, for example Chioggia and other cities of the Venetian lagoon. For this reason it is also known as Little Venice.
