🇬🇧 Kent & Sussex Hiking | English Coast in Summer | Folkestone Hythe Dungeness Camber Sands Rye 🇬🇧
Bit of a long video this one!
Filmed June 2022.
I started my walk on a Wednesday afternoon in Folkestone. After a quick stroll around the Creative Quarter, town centre and Harbour Arm, I made my way west along the coast past Sandgate and into Hythe. From Hythe I made my way inland to the Crypt at St Leonard's Church. I spent an hour or so looking at the bones of our ancestors (serfs from up to 700 years ago, whose families were too poor to afford permanent graves) and talking to the volunteer, Damon there.
After that I went along the Royal Military Canal and onto the beach at Dymchurch after a couple of miles or so of road walking. From there it was a long walk along the coast towards the sound mirrors at Romney Sands and then another few miles walk to find a camping spot at Dungeness. Unfortunately I couldn't find anywhere suitable before sundown and as I was planning to be up and away at 4am, I decided to sleep on the floor of a bird hide.
Next morning, I had breakfast by a lake as the sun was coming up and visited the main part of Dungeness, including the lighthouse, old and new fishing boats, cottages, railway station and power stations (from a distance - you're not allowed to get too close, understandably!). After that it was a couple of hours of walking on shingle - this was exhausting and not good at all for the feet! I was relieved a few miles later when the tide went out and I could walk along the sandbanks, although I did have to get my feet, and therefore socks and boots, wet, in order to get there. Another few miles and I was in Camber Sands where I could finally get a drink. I then had a look around Pontins and had breakfast there before heading back to the beach, then along the river to Rye. A quick look around Rye, and a couple of pints in the Ypres Castle pub, and it was time to head home.
A great way to spend a couple of days in the sunshine 😎
After walking this, I have now walked the entire southeast coast from Southampton round to Whitstable, at various stages.
Thanks as always for watching 😁
