LG CX Firmware 03.21.16 Brings Surprise Benefit Besides Fixing HDR Game Mode Brightness

We analysed the latest firmware update of 03.21.16 on the LG CX OLED TV, and found that besides fixing the dimmed peak brightness in HDR [Game] mode, the firmware also corrected the originally over-bright near-black presentation in HDR10 & Dolby Vision content.

Because there exist unit-to-unit panel variation, the darkening of the 1D LUT with firmware update 03.21.16 may in some cases cause shadow detail to appear darker than reference (or even crushed) when watching HDR10 or Dolby Vision content on your LG CX or GX OLED television.

If you had performed 1D LUT calibration prior to firmware 03.21.16 on the LG CX or GX (OLEDs with Alpha 9 gen 3 chipset) which would have corrected the over-bright near-black EOTF, you may need to get your panel re-calibrated, since the factory 1D LUT adjustments baked into firmware version 03.21.16 would likely darken or crush shadow detail even more.
