SpaceX Starship: Ion Propulsion Systems
Why doesn’t SpaceX use ion engines on the Starship to get to Mars faster?
When I first started studying space science,
I was very excited about ion engines…
Things always look simple until you get into the details.
I did not think it was reasonable to take 8 to 9 months to get to Mars.
I wanted to get there faster.
So, I started designing an ion drive based rapid transit vehicle.
I felt that equipment and supplies could be landed on Mars with uncrewed landers and these could be followed by my crewed rapid transit ion ship.
This ship would use solar panels and hydrogen oxygen fuel cells for power.
The energy from these sources would power the ship and the ion engine.
The water produced by the fuel cells would be pumped into inflatable shells around the ship to shield the crew from radiation.
Argon or Xenon would be the propellant for the ion drive.
Argon would be better as it is easily available on both the Earth and Mars though Xenon gives you more thrust.
I had studied ion drives and understood that the efficiency of these engines was up to ten times better than the best chemical engines.
Why would anyone want to use chemical rockets?
When these beautiful, advanced systems were available?
Then I started doing the math…
Let’s do some of this together and see what we find…
