Powerline Safety | Holmes Group: Tree Pruning

Contact with overhead powerlines can have instant and deadly consequences. Be careful when working around powerlines at home and on the job site.

Look up and be aware of the powerlines around you, and always stay at least three metres away from them. You don’t have to touch a powerline to get a deadly shock; electricity can jump or “arc” to you or your tools if you get too close.

If you work in construction, use a competent designated signaller to make sure high-reach equipment is kept at least three metres from overhead powerlines. Contact your local utility if you need to work within the three metres setback as it may require a disconnect of an overhead powerline.

If you’re a homeowner with trees that are growing close to overhead powerlines, never attempt to trim the branches yourself – this is not a DIY job. Call your local power utility so they can come and prune the tree safely.
