How One Young Woman Defies Gender Stereotypes in Cambodia's Tech Industry
PHNOM PENH – Kao Menghorng, a 20-year-old student, has challenged herself by breaking down barriers around stereotypes, language, and tech literacy to enter the male-dominated tech field.
Originally from Kampong Cham province, Menghorng developed a strong interest in technology while studying at Hun Sen Peam Chikang High School there.
Over the past five years of active involvement in the tech field, she has gained overseas opportunities, allowing her to visit more than ten countries.
Throughout these years, she has observed that society’s mindset toward girls and women in the field has changed, with ongoing support evident in both educational and professional opportunities.
However, she still notices gaps between men and women, as the number of female representatives remains limited. She hopes to see more girls and women take the plunge and pursue careers in the field.
In the coming months, Menghorng will leave for the United States to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science at Syracuse University. She is committed to bringing back the knowledge she gains abroad to help develop Cambodia’s tech sector after graduation.
