SHACKATHON 2026

Goa government’s newly announced “Shackathon” initiative is being positioned as a beachside innovation and remote working event aimed at attracting startups, freelancers, creators, digital nomads and technology professionals to the state on May 21 and 22. The event, promoted by the Department of Information Technology, Electronics and Communications, combines the concept of Goa’s beach shack culture with the globally recognised “hackathon” format traditionally associated with innovation, coding and startup competitions.

MQM24X7 examined the publicly available details surrounding the initiative and found that several operational aspects of the event remain unclear despite growing promotion around it. While traditional hackathons usually involve clearly defined themes, challenge statements, judging panels, timelines, prize structures and measurable innovation goals, public communication regarding Shackathon has largely focused on workation experiences, collaboration spaces and Goa’s positioning as a remote-work destination.
The timing of the event has also raised practical questions, as many licensed beach shacks in Goa begin seasonal shutdown procedures during May ahead of the monsoon period.

Authorities have not yet publicly clarified which venues will be used, what infrastructure will be provided to participants, how the selection process will function, or whether attendees will receive facilities such as dedicated workspaces, internet support, accommodation or startup incentives.
Registrations are currently being circulated through an online Google Form, with participation reportedly open to startups, students, influencers, designers, remote workers and digital creators as Goa attempts to position itself within the growing global remote work and digital economy space.
