Why Were Ships Built Out Of Concrete And Why Didn't They Sink?

Wood, specifically ship timber, has been the traditional material for ship building since time immemorial. Modern ships are mostly made out of steel, light alloys, and composite materials. However, during both world wars, some surprising ships made out of concrete appeared and survived. Those heavy tankers and barges didn't sail for long, but they became real monuments of ship innovation. Others that were built later are still kicking up waves today.
