Georgian Future in Europe Uncertain | How We Got Here

Over the past week, tens of thousands of Georgians poured out onto the streets of Tbilisi, protesting a controversial new law that’s being pushed by the government. As part of the proposed legislation, organizations that receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad will have to register as foreign agents.

Opponents of the bill, including EU officials, say the new law could ruin Georgia’s chances of joining the EU, and that this legislation is similar to that previously introduced by Moscow.

Some analysts say this move is a sign of Georgian elites, as well as the country’s ruling party betting on Russia to win the war in Ukraine. To get into the Kremlin’s good graces, Tbilisi is planning on introducing laws that mirror those in Russia.

Join Jan Darasz and his guest Wojciech Wojtasiewicz, an Analyst from the Polish Institute of International Affairs for this episode of How We Got Here to understand what events led Georgia to its current situation.
