This is the videorecording of a conversation between myself and Massimo Pigliucci, hosted on his Stoa Nova, discussing some of the common mistakes and misunderstandings that people make when it comes to Stoicism. In particular we examine:
The difference between lower-case-s stoicism (a dispositional trait, associated with exhibiting toughness and suppressing emotions) and upper-case-S Stoicism (the actual philosophy as found in the writings of authors such as Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius.
What the actual Stoic views on the emotions are, including the positive emotions that Stoics think we ought to cultivate, such as rational desire, joy, love, affection, rational fear (or caution); negative emotions as occasions for noting that there's something we need to attend to using the resources of reason.
What the key Stoic doctrine of "living in accordance with nature" actually means, which is living in accordance not just with the nature of things in the universe, but attempting to develop the full actuality of our human nature, which is marked by having a capacity for rationality, and being social beings.
How genuine Stoicism has always been a philosophy that, at its core, was egalitarian in terms of gender, despite occasional culturally conditioned statements about men and women by some of its ancient representatives. This rules out any sort of "broicism", i.e. the appropriation of Stoicism by "red-pill" male chauvinists, who tend to focus on the virtue of courage, but fail to cultivate it because - as the Stoics pointed out - there is no genuine courage without justice and prudence.
