Supreme Court nomination to rejuvenate ‘teflon’ Trump’s election campaign

RMIT University’s Joe Siracusa says the replacement of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be “key to the future” of healthcare, immigration, gender equality and sexual equality in the United States.

His comments follow the death of Justice Ginsburg, aged 87, due to complications from pancreatic cancer, opening up the opportunity for President Trump to nominate and push a new Supreme Court Justice through the Senate.

Mr Siracusa pointed out pro-life activists in particular would be keen to take advantage of the situation to find a conservative replacement for Justice Ginsburg, who was an advocate for pro-choice policy.

He said the Supreme Court nomination would rejuvenate President Trump's campaign ahead of the 2020 Presidential election.

“This guy, he’s teflon, nothing sticks whether it’s the impeachment, whether it’s the FBI investigation into him or the Mueller report," he said.

However, Mr Siracusa said Senators who decided to vote for a nominee before the election risked irritating moderate voters but would sideline pro-Trump supporters if they refused to vote.
