CAPTION: The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President George W. Bush says he would do it again and that he was forced to write a letter of apology after being tortured in jail, the journalist's brother claimed Monday. (Dec. 22)

THE IRAQI JOURNALIST WHO THREW HIS SHOES AT PRESIDENT BUSH WROTE A LETTER OF APOLOGY AND ASKED FOR A PARDON LAST WEEK. HIS BROTHER NOW SAYS MUNTADHAR AL-ZEIDI'S WAS TORTURED IN JAIL AND FORCED TO WRITE THE LETTER.

UDAY AL-ZEIDI'S SAYS HIS BROTHER HAS NO REGRETS AND WOULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN. THOUSANDS OF IRAQIS HAVE RALLIED TO DEMAND HIS RELEASE. THE REPORTER'S NEWS CONFERENCE OUTBURST HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY BROADCAST AROUND THE WORLD -- MAKING MUNTADHAR AL-ZEIDI'S A SYMBOL OPPONENTS OF THE U.S.-LED INVASION AND OCCUPATION OF IRAQ.
LAST WEEK A JUDGE IN THE CASE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT AL-ZEIDI'S FACE WAS BEATEN. UDAY AL-ZEIDI SAYS HE SAW MORE-SEVERE INJURIES DURING A JAIL VISIT-- INCLUDING A MISSING TOOTH AND CIGARETTE BURNS ON HIS BROTHER'S EARS. AN IRAQI COURT OFFICIAL SAYS THE JOURNALIST DIDN'T ASK THE JUDGE FOR A DOCTOR OR MAKE ANY TORTURE ALLEGATIONS.
NEITHER BUSH NOR IRAQI PRIME MINISTER AL-MALIKI ARE SEEKING CHARGES, BUT THE JUDGE SAYS HE CANNOT LEGALLY DROP THE CHARGES. IF CONVICTED AL-ZEIDI COULD SPEND TWO YEARS IN JAIL FOR INSULTING A FOREIGN LEADER.
UDAY SAYS HIS BROTHER'S TRIAL IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN ON DECEMBER 31ST.

"When I met Muntadhar yesterday, I saw signs of torture on his face, body and his limbs. I asked him 'how did this happen?' He said 'they first beat me with an iron bar when I first came out of the news conference room'. He said he was screaming and they must have heard his voice. So they used the iron bar."

"Muntadhar filed a lawsuit and authorised me to file a suit against the correspondent who beat him up, the correspondent of Kurd Sat. It was the duty of the security people to protect Muntadhar al-Zeidi. So a lawsuit has been filed against al-Maliki's security detail, and we will file another lawsuit against Hussein, the Kurd Sat correspondent."
