വീണ്ടുമൊരു ഓണക്കാലം. കൈതോല വട്ടിയിൽ പൂപറിക്കാൻ ഓടിനടന്നിരുന്ന ഒരുകുട്ടിക്കാലമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു പണ്ട്. പുത്തനുടുപ്പും ഓണക്കളികളും ആരവങ്ങളും ആഘോഷങ്ങളും പിന്നെ വിഭവസമൃദ്ധമായ ഓരോണ സദ്യയും. അത്തം തുടങ്ങി തിരുവോണം വരെ നീണ്ടുനിൽക്കുന്ന ആഘോഷങ്ങൾ. കഴിഞ്ഞു പോയ ഓരോ ഓണക്കാലവും ഏതൊരാൾക്കും കുളിരുള്ളൊരോർമ്മയായി മനസ്സിൽ മായാതെ നിലനിൽക്കും. ജാതിമത വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഓരോ വീട്ടുമുറ്റത്തും ഓണം എത്തിനിൽക്കുന്നു.

ഞാനും എന്റേയീ കൊച്ചു വീട്ടിൽ തിരക്കിലായിരുന്നു. അരിപ്പൊടിയും നാളികേരവും കൊണ്ടുണ്ടാക്കിയ നമ്മുടെ നാടൻ പലഹാരങ്ങളായ അച്ചപ്പം,
ഉണ്ണിയപ്പം, അവലോസ് പൊടി, മൈദ കൊണ്ട് വെട്ടിപൊരി, ( ഇതെല്ലാം പലനാടുകളിൽ പല പേരുകളിലാവും ) പച്ചക്കായ കൊണ്ട് ഉപ്പേരി. അങ്ങിനെ ഓണത്തിനുള്ള ഒരുക്കങ്ങൾ പൂർത്തിയായിരുന്നു. നമിയും ( നവമി ) കൂട്ടുകാരിയും പൂ പറിക്കാനും
കളത്തിൽ പൂവെക്കാനുമുള്ള തിരക്കിലാണ്. വൈകീട്ടത്തെ ചായക്കൊപ്പം പലഹാരങ്ങൾ കഴിക്കാൻ പടിഞ്ഞാറെ വീട്ടിലെ മുത്തശ്ശിയും അമ്മായിയും അവരുടെ കൊച്ചുമക്കളും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

തിരുവോണ നാളിൽ ഓണത്തപ്പനെ വരവേൽക്കാൻ ഞങ്ങളും തയ്യാറായി. കളം അണിഞ്ഞു കാക്കേര്യപ്പനെ പൂജിച്ചു. കളത്തിൽ തുമ്പപ്പൂവും അരി അടയും വച്ചു. ഓണം കൊള്ളാൻ വടക്കേ വീട്ടിലെ വാവക്കുട്ടനെ വിളിച്ചു ഒപ്പം വാവയും വേദയും എത്തി. സന്തോഷം നിറഞ്ഞ നിമിഷങ്ങൾ.

ഈ ആഘോഷ ചടങ്ങുകൾ കേരളത്തിന്റെ പല ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും ഓരോ രീതിയിലായിരിക്കും. എന്നാലും മനസ്സിൽ നന്മയുടെ തിരി തെളിയിച്ച് സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ വാഴയിലയിൽ സമാധാനത്തിന്റെ സദ്യയുണ്ണാൻ എല്ലാവരെയും ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു...

Another Onam season. There was a time, when we used to run to pick flowers in our palm baskets. New clothes, Onam games, noises and celebrations followed by a sumptuous one-on-one feast. Celebrations from Attam to Thiruvonam. Every passing Onam season will remain indelibly etched in the mind of everyone. Onam is celebrated in every backyard of Kerala, irrespective of caste or religion.
I was also busy in my little house. Achappam, our traditional dessert made from rice powder and coconut,
Unniyappam, avalos powder, chopped with maida, (all of which have different names in many countries), Vettupori with maida, banana chips made with raw banana etc..
Thus the preparations for Onam were complete. Nami (Navami) and her friend in picking flowers and making Pookalam. Grandmother, aunt and their grandchildren were in the west of the house to have dessert with evening tea.

We are also ready to welcome Onathappan on Thiruvonam. We dressed up and worshiped Kakkeryappan. Put thumba flowers and rice cakes in the field. Vavakuttan from the north of our house was called to buy Onam and Vava and Veda arrived too. Moments full of joy.

These celebrations will be different in different parts of Kerala. However, we invite everyone to have a feast of peace on the banana leaf of love with a twist of goodness in the mind ...
