Much more than just earning badges or points 👾

I spent years of my teenage life playing World of Warcraft, and who would have thought that would have paid off in my career years later.

Not me.

But World of Warcraft, and so many other games follow these same principles for keeping people coming back time and time again.

There are 4 principles of game theory, and they are:

1. Randomness
Give your users random rewards for things, and add elements of randomness throughout the gameplay and story. These things trigger dopamine and are addictive because you never know what you're going to get (hello, short form video anyone...)

2. Vertigo
This is about creating a sense of scale, height, and contrast between fast and slow. It's about shock and awe, and creating a feeling of uneasiness balanced with feelings of calm. That repetition is something that feels good. It's the same as doing something for the adrenaline hit, or why people love haunted houses or watching scary movies.

3. Competition
This one does what it says on the tin. Let people compete with each other, and against the game. We love a challenge, so give your users one.

4. Simulation
Humans love pretending things, and humans learn by putting themselves in simulated situations. Make people feel like something else. Nike does this by saying 'We serve athletes, and if you have a body, you are an athlete'. How can you make people simulate another reality?

And who knew, these principles apply just as well to great products as they do to video games.
