On January 17, 1991, US Navy pilot Michael Scott Speicher was shot down over Iraq on the very first night of the Gulf War. Within hours the Pentagon declared him killed in action — without launching a single search or recovery mission. His case was officially closed. For 18 years nobody went back. In 2009 his remains were finally found in the Iraqi desert. He had survived the ejection. What happened after that has never been conclusively answered.
This is the most unresolved story of the entire Gulf War.
