The Soldier Who Captured 132 Enemies ALONE In World War 1
One soldier captured 132 German soldiers and killed 25 enemy troops in a single engagement during World War 1. This is the legendary true story of Sergeant Alvin York and his impossible feat in the Argonne Forest that made him America's most decorated WWI hero and earned him the Medal of Honor.
October 8, 1918, Argonne Forest, France. The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was raging as the largest American military operation in World War I. Sergeant Alvin Cullum York of the 328th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Division, led a patrol of 17 men with orders to target and eliminate German machine gun nests that were slaughtering American troops.
The patrol successfully captured a group of German soldiers, but suddenly came under devastating fire from heavily fortified ridge positions. German machine guns opened up from multiple directions. York's commanding officers fell wounded or killed. Within minutes, only seven men remained combat-effective.
Alvin York, a skilled hunter and marksman from the mountains of Tennessee, took command. Using the deadly precision he learned hunting turkeys back home, York systematically eliminated German machine gunners one by one with his M1917 Enfield rifle. Each shot found its mark with lethal accuracy.
When six German officers realized their machine guns were being silenced and charged York with bayonets fixed, he switched to his Colt .45 pistol. Using a brilliant tactical decision from his hunting experience, York shot them in reverse order, starting from the back. The front soldiers never knew their comrades behind were dropping, preventing them from taking cover.
The result was staggering: 132 German prisoners captured single-handedly by Sergeant York, with 25 enemy soldiers killed. York marched his prisoners back through American lines, capturing even more Germans along the way. His actions shattered the German defensive line and became a turning point in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
On April 18, 1919, General John Pershing personally presented Sergeant Alvin York with the Medal of Honor. France awarded him the Croix de Guerre. York became the most decorated American soldier of World War I and a national hero.
