At home MONOPRINT bag upcycle

Here is a simple at home DIY project for you to try out during lockdown.

If you have oil paints, old plastic sleeves for documents and a paint roller you should be able to follow the tutorial no problem.
I recognise that not everyone has oil paint lying around their house and that acrylic paint or gouache are more popular options however, they are way more tricky to work with. Oil paint takes a while to dry and it gives you plenty of time to trace even the most intricate image whereas acrylic and gouache might dry halfway through.

Everything else is interchangeable:
- The plastic sleeve i used was from my A1 Foundation portfolio and is quite thick but you might have a thinner sleeve from documents or perhaps an unopened sketchbook tightly wrapped in plastic. Could be a thrifty option, why not.
- The roller I used was rubber, since that is what you would typically use when printing on lino-cut or using drypoint needle. You can replace it with a foam roller, a dish sponge or even just a paintbrush as long as you do your best to avoid paint strokes for better results.
- Masking tape can be replaced with any other tape, I just like to use this to later recycle or add to my sketchbook, but if you are out of any kind of tape you could also just weigh your print down with books, or stapling it to your surface to secure it.
- For accurate tracing i used a knitting needle, but you can easily replace it with a pencil, that is not too sharp to avoid tearing.
- For my final canvas I used a cotton tote bag which I received from @converse_russia but you can transfer this onto any surface, a sketchbook cover, paper, clothing or fabric (as long as it's bristles are not too long)

I encourage you to explore this fun technique i rediscovered while flipping through 9 of my old sketchbooks for a video -
