Fashion degree collection video | Corona collection
I took a 2 week break from posting for the sake of my degree, but I'll be back to my regular schedule after a good 24 sleep. Since there is plenty of degree collection development I am yet to show on my channel you can expect a few more in depth videos regarding the work process and hopefully some sewing vlogs, once we are back in the studio actually making our collections. Until then here is a condensed degree collection development process in video form.
Today is my last ever assessment at BHSAD and it feels bittersweet, as i guess it should.
Over the past 9 months us degree students have had a chance to develop a deeper understanding of fashion design process by working across 6 looks, creating a cohesive narrative. Having started with a vague idea my collection went through several changes in colour palette from bright to muted and balanced, in silhouette from all over the place to sculptural and body conscious and in concept, developing into a well researched rich storyline.
Focusing on sustainability and clothing recycling from the start has posed plenty of challenges influencing every aspect of the collection and putting limitations on design development process. After loosening the restrictions and introducing fabrics outside the donation pile the work process became more organic and fluid still using a number of sustainable approaches such as zero-waste pattern cutting, recycled + deadstock leather and recycled clothing.
Naturally, after a short Christmas break, alongside new starting points and experiments simultaneously changed the textile prints. They morphed from controlled repeat graphics into interrupted asymmetrical document scans, personalised blanks, and a more hand-craft approach with exciting paperclip leather debossing, suede-leather dye transfer and linocut stamp prints.
Despite a short delay and the uncertainty of moving the entirety of the course to remote studies the collection managed to keep up the pace with a detailed construction analysis, design development discussions as well as styling and portfolio layout tutorials. Surprisingly, the shift in focus to a digital submission has helped with the decision making process without harming the outcomes. With a vast library of shape, silhouette and textile experiments and a knowledge of Adobe software acquired throughout the 4 years of studies, developing an advanced final outcome has been an enjoyable process given the circumstances and has formed a new set of professional industry required skills.
The education at BHSAD has taught us to be openminded, flexible, experimental and adaptable all of which have come into play during this difficult time and with the world changing in all aspects of life it is our job to shape it into the best version of itself.
