Another deep dive, this time on how to recondition an Ironhead swingarm bearing retainer nuts threads and how the bearings and races are stacked up when installing the swingarm. For the record, I can’t take credit for the valve grinding compound technique. Years ago I was working on a BSA and I had dicked up threads on a left hand thread Whitworth nut and bolt. I just didn’t see any likelihood of finding a left handed Whitworth tap or die. So I got on one of the British Bike news groups back when you had to use newsreader software where I found a thread on “unknackering” dicked up threads. Here is the text of that post: “Here is the wisdom of the ancients, as taught by friends more experienced in MC repair, but also found in Ian Johnson's Classic Hints and Tips for Motorcyclists, collated from the Classic Motorcycle magazine. 1) If the nut will start on the thread, put a little valve grinding paste on the threads and work steadily back and forth. My friendly neighborhood machinist & hot rod builder gave me some "diamond dust", which was mixed with oil, for the same purpose.”
