Art of the Romanov Dynasty – Part 3
This is a four-part lecture on the art of the Romanov Dynasty that includes a video and a written essay located on https://musings-on-art.org. The first 100 years of the Romanov Dynasty, covered in Part 1, was a period of barbarianism as Russia struggled through the Middle Ages for hundreds of years longer than Europe. The next 100 years, covered in Part 2, is a time of westernization and covers two of the most famous tsars – Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. Part 3 start from Catherine the Great's death in 1796 and ends with the death of Alexander II in 1881. This period saw the greatest advancements in art accomplished by Russian artists.
