Konstantin Korovin Retrospective in Moscow 2012

In Moscow this summer we were very fortunate to see two fabulous special exhibitions, one for Nicolai Fechin and the other for Konstantin Korovin. Both collections contained work spanning the artists entire lifetime, from early to mature pieces. These exhibitions were of such high caliber that I am sure I will never see this much work by these artists in one place again in my lifetime. The curators of the Fechin exhibit gathered his work from all over Russia and the United States. The last exhibition of Korovin's work was at the Tretyakov Gallery in 1920, right before he immigrated to France. That exhibit was not as large as this year's and Korovin had been deeply disappointed because only his early "immature" work was exhibited. In the United States we have been blessed with a good introduction to Nicolai Fechin's work, but not Konstantin Korovin. Considered one of the greatest Russian Impressionist, Korovin was a man of many talents, not only a painter, but he was also a theatre designer and writer. As a painter he was skilled in all genres: landscape, still life and portraits. Korovin was born in Moscow to well-to-do parents of the merchant class. His father was a lawyer and his mother was very involved in music and painting. In fact she raised two artists, both of her sons Sergey and Konstantin were painters.
