Evidence of Health: The Peckham Experiment (1998)

Slide lecture on The Peckham Experiment experiment designed to determine whether people as a whole would, given the opportunity, take a vested interest in their own health and fitness and expend effort to maintain it. The experiment took place between 1926 and 1950, first at The Pioneer Health Centre in Queens Road, Peckham and then at St Mary’s Road from 1935. The idea was conceived by Dr George Scott Williamson and Dr Innes Pearse who were interested understanding what health was particularly within the context of preventative social medicine. How did an individual behave when in health? How would healthy people relate to one another and what would be the consequence of healthy adults and healthy children?
