Beta Oxidation of Fatty Acid || Lipid Metabolism || Biochemistry || NEET PG

This is the video on Beta oxidation of fatty acids along with NEET PG and AIIMS MCQs.

Fatty acids are amphipathic compounds containing a long hydrocarbon chain and a terminal carboxylate group (R-COOH).
For the utilization of stored fatty acids in the form of triacylglycerol in adipose tissues requires three stages of processing:
Mobilization of lipid (lipolysis):

1.Fatty acids are stored in adipose tissues as triacylglycerol also called neutral fats or triglyceride
2. Activation of fatty acids:
3. Oxidation of fatty acyl-CoA:
In β-oxidation two carbon units sequentially removed beginning from the carboxyl end of the fatty acid in the form of acetyl-CoA.
It is called β-oxidation because oxidation of fatty acids occurs at the β-carbon atom.
β-oxidation pathway occurs in mitochondria.
Sequence of Reactions of β-oxidation

Acyl-CoA is degraded by a repeated sequence of four reactions :
1. Oxidation by FAD
2. Hydration
3. Oxidation by NAD
4. Cleavage.
