Mary Wilson Supremes become Legends #marywilson #RIHMaryWilson @Mary Wilson –The Official Channel
The World came to know Mary Wilson as one third of the most successful “girl group” in history.
Born in Greenville, Mississippi. Mary’s journey to superstardom began when she met Florence Ballard and Diane Ross in the late 1950’s in Detroit’s Brewster projects.
First known as the Primettes. In the beginning Mary sang lead along with all the other members of the group…. She was given the ballads because her voice had a smokey and sultry sound to it.
They became the Supremes after Berry Gordy signed them to Motown In 1961.
For a time, they were Jokingly referred to as the NO-HIT Supremes, because it took years for them to get a hit.
Of course, That all changed in 1964, when the girls got their first big hit with Holland Dozier Holland’s “Where did our love go.”
Then came another hit,
And another.
Until they had five consecutive number one records, including their trademark:
High glamor, poise, and class top the list describing the Supremes appeal to worldwide audiences.
The trio opened doors previously closed to black groups….performing at places like the prestigious Copacabana in New York city
The Supremes fame and success pushed Mary to work harder at mastering her craft.
When she wasn’t touring, she and her group members were working on harmonies and choreography.
Their schedule may have been exhausting, but Mary loved it none the less.
“I just loved performing” Mary said.
Their highly visible TV appearances shot their fame into orbit. A total of 17 on the Ed Sullivan Show, the most of any of the Motown artists allowing them to become the first black musical acts to achieve complete and sustained crossover success.
Families everywhere a reason to gather around the TV.
As performers, it just didn’t get any better. The fact that Mary and her group members could adapt their singing to any type of songs and genre, they were able to open doors previously closed to black singers.
By the late 60’s, the Supremes had racked up an astounding 12 number one records and their only rivals were the Beatles.
After every thing was said and done, the Supremes had 12 number one singles, setting the record for the most consecutive number one hits by an American group.
They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Mary was the only original Supreme present.
Although she did more backgrounds than leads in the early years, her talent was undeniable.
They rivaled the Beatles in Worldwide popularity.
