4 Things I wish I knew when I started as a private investigator.
If I had known these 4 things when I became a private investigator and started my business, I would have made a lot more money a lot sooner!
1. I would have taken domestic cases.
These are the cheating husband, cheating wife and all the variations of cheaters. Also, child custody cases and alimony / spousal support cases.
These are cases where you are hired by the individual who wants to know the truth rather than by a company or law firm.
Eventually I did take these cases, but I should have started taking them on “day one” just to get the cash flow needed for a new business!
2. Start working for law firms right away.
I didn't want to have to “rely” on law firms to make money, but the fact is these are very lucrative clients and if you get several of them, you won't have to rely on a single one!
3. I would have started out process serving right away.
This is a real money maker and gets your foot in the door with law firms. Don't miss this one!
4. I would have taken criminal defense cases.
Eventually I did take criminal defense work and what I learned was, if the guy is guilty, I'm only going to uncover more evidence of guilt (or maybe corroborate the existing evidence). This means most of the time the guy will end up going to prison on a plea deal. That saves the victim a ton of grief because they don't have to testify in court. Most victims are happy to avoid the cross examination of a defense attorney.
Let me know if you have a question you’d like me to answer in one of my weekly videos.
