From Empire to Europe: Imperial Preference

Great Britain built her empire on mercantile trade with her colonies. But after World War II, the economy of the United Kingdom was in ruin, in exchange for American support the UK turned away from mercantilism and embraced free trade, eventually, the economic situation lead the UK to join the European Union, and the British Empire faded.
