Defense Material manufacturing hubs in ASEAN #Asean #military

A particularly interesting case is Singapore. While it originally relied heavily on Israeli and Western technology, decades of investment allowed it to develop indigenous systems such as the Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle, Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicle, and advanced naval and electronic warfare systems. Today, Singapore is arguably the only ASEAN country that can design and manufacture a wide range of sophisticated military equipment largely on its own.

For Vietnam, the story is different. Most major platforms—fighters, submarines, air defense systems, and tanks—still trace their origins to Russian or Soviet technology. However, Vietnam is increasingly focused on mastering electronics, drones, communications systems, and naval construction domestically, reducing dependence on any single foreign supplier. A capable marine force is still considered extremely important in Southeast Asia because the region is dominated by islands, coastlines, and disputed seas. Many ASEAN countries — like Philippines and Indonesia — are archipelagic nations with thousands of islands that must be defended, supplied, and monitored.

Marines are designed for exactly that kind of environment. Unlike regular armies, they specialize in amphibious operations, coastal defense, island security, rapid deployment, and disaster response. In a region where tensions can happen around reefs, islands, and maritime borders, marines are often the first troops deployed because they can move quickly between land and sea.
