ASEAN countries by the overall strength of their defense manufacturing ecosystem—not just the number of factories, but also their ability to design, produce, maintain, and export military equipment.

Foreign influence and regional tensions also played a huge role. During the Cold War, major powers like the United States, Soviet Union, and China supported different governments or rebel groups across Asia. Weapons, funding, and training from outside powers prolonged many conflicts. Even today, some insurgencies continue because of illegal trade networks, smuggling, and access to difficult terrain. However, many countries in the Asia-Pacific have gradually reduced insurgent violence through economic growth, peace agreements, stronger governance, and regional cooperation.

1. Singapore is ranked first because it has the most advanced defense industry in ASEAN. Companies such as ST Engineering produce armored vehicles, naval systems, electronics, drones, and advanced military technologies. Singapore invests heavily in research and development, giving it capabilities that exceed what would normally be expected from its small size.

2. Indonesia comes second due to its large industrial base and state-owned defense firms such as PT PAL Indonesia and PT Dirgantara Indonesia. Indonesia manufactures warships, aircraft, armored vehicles, and various military equipment, making it one of the most self-sufficient defense producers in Southeast Asia.

3. Malaysia has a diversified defense sector with strengths in aerospace maintenance, naval construction, and armored vehicle production. Companies such as Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation contribute to the country's ability to support its armed forces and participate in international defense projects.

4. Thailand has steadily expanded its domestic defense industry through organizations such as Defense Technology Institute. While it still relies on foreign suppliers for many advanced systems, Thailand has developed capabilities in military vehicles, electronics, weapons integration, and maintenance.

5. Vietnam is considered an emerging defense manufacturing hub. Companies such as Viettel Group have helped Vietnam develop indigenous military electronics, drones, communications systems, patrol vessels, and small arms. Although it trails Singapore and Indonesia in sophistication, Vietnam's defense industry has been growing rapidly in recent years.

Overall, the ranking reflects industrial capability, technological sophistication, production capacity, export potential, and self-reliance, rather than military size alone. A country may have a large military but still rank lower if it depends heavily on imported weapons and equipment.
