President Rodrigo Roa Duterte addresses several issues confronting the nation, as well as the government’s response on the current COVID-19 situation, in his weekly Talk to the People and meeting with several Cabinet members.

During the first part of the meeting, the Chief Executive listens to the accomplishment report and program updates from Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez.

On the issue of procurement of face masks and face shields by the Department of Health (DOH), he reiterates that these items were procured in March and April of 2020 when the pandemic was at its peak and prices of medical equipment skyrocketed due to scarcity of supplies and abrupt increase in demand.

With the continued rise in COVID-19 cases, and the country recording its highest single daily tally of new cases on 23 August 2021, President Duterte cites that the government needs to revisit its policies on public health in order to stop the cases from increasing further and ramp up its vaccination efforts as scientific studies have shown that vaccinated people are less likely to develop severe symptoms when they contract the disease.

The Philippines reached the 30 million mark in the total number of vaccines administered throughout the country, with more than 17 million Filipinos given their first dose and 13 million people already fully inoculated.
